Why I quit talking to people about it

Asperger's is the new fad diagnosis.

He doesn't have Asperger's -- he is one of the funniest people I know.

You don't understand -- Asperger's is serious, I mean they're fucked up about sex, my cousin has it and he is really inappropriate.

Anyone can read something in the DSM and think they have it. You can convince yourself the criteria fits for almost anything.

I don't need to be validated or convince anyone other than folk who matter in/to the situation(although I wouldn't hate a little understanding either). The sad thing is, it's thinking such as the kind involved in these snap to judgement type of responses that can close off opportunity to those who could really benefit from proper diagnosis -- namely, our family.

Sign of the times. Google something, read one article and suddenly everyone's a medical expert. Sorry you have to deal with this on top of the unavoidable issues.

Because I spend a lot of time on the computer, I think people think that's what I'm doing! Reading one article and diagnosing.

The thing that kills me is that people are constantly telling me how smart I am, or what a good head I have on my shoulders, until I have something of consequence to say -- then everyone thinks I've suddenly abandoned logic?

I should start telling people, "He has Asperger's, but it's okay -- they sell a cure for eighty five bucks and all he has to do is drink a bottle of olive oil and sleep with pennies on his eyes. I can't wait! All this struggle will end with just eighty five dollars and one week on the potty."
